Skim boarding has been around for a long time dating back to the year 1920s mainly in Laguna Beach CA. People began getting more and more interested in this sport and started making skim boards from plywood and used these boards when they went to the beach to enjoy themselves. Furthermore the whole world developed interest in this sport and not only a particular section of people. Also the boards that people manufactured themselves were not in good shape and size, this lead to people not being able to control their board. But in the 1970s a man named Tex Haines started making skim boards and adopted this idea into a business venture. He started the business in Laguna. The change that Tex brought to the skimboards was that now the skimboards were manufactured with keeping in minds different shapes and sizes that would let the rider control the board. Furthermore the boards that were made and manufactured were now fiberglass material unlike the previous ones that were made from plywood. As this business started flourishing and skimboards demand increased many other shops and businesses came out and established themselves.
People take skimboarding lightly and it is and enjoyable activity to do while one relaxes from school or on a weekend. But this activity has turned into a real water sport where serious and professional skimboarders take part in different competitions such as the Victoria Skimboards World Championship of Skimboarding. Many people and athletes compete in these events and come from far away places and countries.
Skimboarding is different from surfing as it is not concerned with going into deeper waters but instead begins at the beach. The skimboarder waits for a wave to come and then runs towards it skimboard in hand, while one places the skimboard on a wave, one has to maneuver him or herself on the board. Some people try jumping onto the board where others try to slide and slip right onto it. Afterwards it all depends on how well one can keep their balance as they ride the wave. It is pretty easy to understand but beginners should try practicing outside on shallow water or on the beaches. This would give them some idea about what to expect when doing the real thing. Furthermore even if people are not beginners and just do not like going to ride the waves they can still enjoy on their skimboards doing numerous grinds and tricks outside.
Skimboards are different from surfboards in the sense that they are lighter and smaller in size. They are mainly in different shapes such as in oval or rain drop shapes. The size of the board depends on the person’s height as the board should be half the size of the person’s height or length. Many current boards are being manufactured from carbon fiber, fiberglass, S-Glass, Kevlar material and E-Glass. Boards for beginners are made from wood. Boards such as Zap skimboards are popular amongst youngsters. These boards are expensive and are more advanced then normal boards.
Skimboarding is not always fun and games as various accidents can occur. Many skimboarders damage their body which includes broken bones and wounds on their skin and others fall on something hard while running to catch a wave. Furthermore skimboarding continuously and regularly for long hours can affect ones bones and health. The best way to escape this problem is to routinely warm up or stretch before doing skimboarding.
People all over the world in Asia, America, Europe and many more practice skimboarding. Furthermore people also do inland skimboarding on peculiar and interesting places such as wet grass! Furthermore skimboarding companies such as Zap, Victoria, Exile and Slotstik sponsor their own company skimboarders to participate in different events to promote their own company and brands.
Skimboading is turning into a lucrative and expensive business. As time is passing Skimboardings popularity is also increasing day by day. In the end skimboarding is turning out as the next generation in watersports and is a very enjoyable and pleasing past time if one follows all the basic rules and guidelines related to the sport.
