Sailing is the art of propelling or sailing a sailboat. A sailboat is another kind of boat. Sailboats can be of various sizes i.e. they can be small sailboats as well as very large. The larger sailboats will be called Sail ships. Unlike a motor boat, a sail boat is propelled by the help of sails. A sail is a piece of cloth which is made as such that it catches maximum wind and provides a boost to the sailing boat, thus moving it forward. A sailing boat can also be steered in any direction by the help of a rudder. So, sailboat or a sailing ship moves to and fro because of  the reaction to wind stored on its sails i.e. by the law of inertia. If there is no wind i.e. the weather is very calm, the sailboat will not be able to move forward instead, it will only float plainly on water. This is so because sails can only create a lift if there is wind blowing on the sea.

Considerations Before Buying A Used Sailboat:

As there are many sailboats for sale both in the market and on the internet, one should carefully plan and then, make a decision. A proper survey should be carried out. Professional buyers of boats can also be asked to assist in this decision. Used sailboats go through a lot of wear and tear over the years, and it cannot be seen directly.

One should ask the owner why he/she is selling the boat. If there is a valid reason e.g. if the owner wants a larger boat or is moving away, one should consider because sometimes, owners sell the boat because of some hidden defect. Also check the interest of the owner in maintenance of the boat. You can also ask to check the records of maintenance by which you can see when oil was changed last time or when the last tuning of engine was done. This will help in further maintenance of the boat. Also this will give you a fair idea as to how much maintenance is required and whether or not you can afford it.

If a person is buying a sailboat for the first time, one should choose to buy a sailboat made of fiberglass. This is so because; wooden boats require much more maintenance. One should thoroughly check any errosion at the bottom of the used sailboat, the sailboat should be checked for leakages, cracks and accuracy of fittings that are on the boat. The exterior of the sailboat should also be checked because a re-paint would be very costly. Yet, if the boat only needs a polish, one should go for it.

One should stay away from very old engines. Also one should avoid obsolete engines because then, parts would not be available and one might face a lot of issues with such a machine. One should also check for leakages in the fuel tank and the connecting pipes. Also electrical wiring and plugs should be checked. Another important consideration is that used sails should be thoroughly checked. There should be no repairs, torn parts, or stretches.

At the end, another important thing is to go on the internet and search for used boats there. There are many good sites for used or new sailboats like sunfish sailboats or north sails.
