An apartment is an independent accommodation unit that takes up one part of a whole building. Apartments are owned or are rented as well. A number of apartment-dwellers have their own homes, either as co-ops, in which the inhabitants own shares of a company that is the owner of the building; or in condominiums, whose inhabitants are the owners of their apartments and share tenure of the public places. The majority of the apartments are in buildings made on purpose, but big older homes are sometimes separated into apartments.

Apartments can be divided into more than a few types. One is studio apartments, effectiveness or bachelor style apartments. All these are likely to be the smallest houses with the cheapest rental fees in a provided area. These types of apartments typically consist largely of a big room which includes the shared sitting and dining rooms. There are generally kitchen amenities as part of this innermost room, but the washroom is its own smaller detached room.

Moving up from the competencies of riverside apartments are single bedroom apartments where the bedroom is a split room from the rest of the rooms. Then there are double bedrooms, triple bedrooms, etc. apartments. Little apartments often have a single entrance or exit.

Bigger apartments generally have 2 entrances or exits, probably a door in the front and another in the back. Based upon the building structure, the entrance or exit gates may be straight to the outer part of the building or to a common part inside, for instance a hallway. Based on the location, rental buildings may be available, and these apartments are fully furnished or unfurnished into which a renter generally shifts with his own furniture. A garden apartment building has a number of characteristics of a townhouse: each building has its own entry, and apartments for rent are not designed up and down over one another. Though, a garden apartment building (usually low income apartments) is generally a single story unit and not more than two stories; they are normally single bed apartments and not more than double bed apartments. Some garden apartment buildings accommodate a garage under each unit, where you can park one car. These garages have pedestrian entry from a common patio open at one part. The grounds are more lined as compared with other moderately scaled cheap apartments.

Laundry amenities may be found in a common place available to all the renters in the apartment building, or each building may have its own amenities. Based on when the apartment was constructed and the design of the apartment, services such as water and electricity may be common for all the units in the apartment rental building or separate for each building and billed one by one to each renter (though, several areas in America have ruled it against the law to divide a water bill among all the renters, particularly if a pool is on the grounds). Channels for phone connection are usually incorporated in each apartment for rent. Phone service is optional and is basically always billed individually from the rent charges. Cable television and related services are additional as well. Parking places, air conditioner, and additional storage place may or may not be integrated with apartment rentals. Rental charges often limit the highest number of folks who can live in each apartment. On or just about the ground floor of the unit, a string of mailboxes are usually kept in a place available to the public in apartment finders and, therefore, to the letter-carrier as well. Every apartment usually gets its own mailbox with separate keys to it. A few extremely large rental apartments with permanent personnel may take mail from the mailman and supply mail-delivery service. Near the mailboxes or a few other places available to outsiders, there may be a signal (just like a doorbell) for each individual apartment.
